Houston Horror Film Festival πŸ”ͺ😱

I've been hearing some talk about a pretty exciting event that is coming to Houston in 2020, as a fan of horror films I was very interested when I heard about the Houston Horror Film Festival! Right now,  I don't know if you've heard about this online, but I've been seeing posts on facebook and instagram, talking about everything as more and more information comes out. From what I've heard, there will be film screenings, special guests and a vendor room filled with plenty of goodies to satisfy everyone's interests :3 Like anyone else, I've seen pictures and videos about different horror-themed conventions and festivals, but as they were always in a different city or state, I've never been able to go. So imagine how excited I was when I saw a post about the Houston Horror Film Festival!!!

Currently, if you want to go to a horror-theme festival or con, there aren't really any nearby. While Texas Frightmare Weekend is in Dallas, most of them are far away and require a roadtrip. The Houston Horror Festival, however, is going to be held at Marriot South at the Hobby Airport. So not only will you be able to enjoy the film festival, but there's plenty of things all around the location to keep you busy before and after the festival each day. Not only is this location much more easily accessible than farther away cons, the hotel offers complimentary shuttling to and from the hotel! You often hear people that go to festivals or conventions whinging about how it was in the middle of nowhere or so far from restaurants or shops that it was beyond inconvenient. It certainly looks like the people behind the festival have thought of this and made sure to pick a location close to pretty much anything. Not to mention the shuttle that goes to and from the hotel to airport is sure to save time and effort, as well as avoiding an unneeded headache once you land.

So who is behind this event? Troy Escamilla, an indepent film-maker and Tony Rodriguez, a horror mega-fan. Both men are residents of Houston and decided to use their combined love of horror films to bring something unique and much-needed to the Houston-area. Escamilla is the director of three films: Party Night, Stirring and his most recent film, Teacher Shortage, which is currently in post-production, though promises to be a must see! Party Night and Stirring, which were filmed around Houston, are due to be released by Wild Eye Releasing later this year, so definitely keep your eyes open πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ‘€! Tony Rodriguez is a huge fan of all things horror and regularly posts on instagram, showing his amazing collection of horror movies and collectibles, as well as posting photos with some pretty well-known and loved faces that all fans would recognise.

One very intersting and exciting aspect of the festival is that there will be a screening for indie horror films and short films. As long as the film is horror, or belongs to one of its sub-genres such as supernatutal, psychological, monster, slasher, etc., it's eligible and can be admitted. The only other requirement is that if your film isn't in english, you must add english subtitles. I'm sure that you'll agree that this is a pretty exciting opportunity for any independent filmmaker. There will also be a list of different awards handed out at the end of the screening. I'm sure this will be a very big opportunity for anyone that makes films and could lead to a much wider audience and some much-needed exposure!

From the special guests, vendor room to film screening and award ceremony, the Houston Horror Film Festival is definitely shaping up to be an exciting and interesting event that will hopefully become a yearly event! While there's still a long time to go before the festival comes, I'm certainly looking forward to more news and information to come out. Right now, there isn't any information about what vendors or special guests will be there, but I'm sure the sooner we get to September 2020, the more we'll learn!

If you're interested in the festival like I am, I would highly recommend you check out their website and facebook page for more info and to stay up to date!
